Every child has their heroes; people they admire and whose footsteps they dream of following. For me, those idols came from the world of nature and wildlife. I was fascinated by the natural world from a young age, and my role models were the great educators and storytellers of natural history. Two men had the greatest influence on me growing up: a Hungarian ecologist and explorer, János Balogh, and of course David Attenborough, who turns 100 today. I grew up watching his extraordinary documentaries about Life on Earth. He taught generations of us not only to appreciate the beauty around us, but also to understand the importance of protecting The Living Planet and the delicate balance explored throughout The Trials of Life. Thank you for a lifetime of inspiration, and happy birthday, Sir David.
