Film Photography at Brazos Bend State Park – Texas

The Brazos Bend State Park in Texas (map) quickly became my favorite place in the Houston area. Its wildlife is amazing, alligators and thousands of birds live here. It also has many wonderful trails to hike and recently I spent some time in the park and explored some of these trails to find interesting compositions for landscape photography. I took many photographs during these scoutings with my “new” film camera on Kodak Ektar 100 film. Besides the place searching, I also wanted to test this film and get familiar with the characteristics and the limitations it has. I have never used Ektar or any other type of color negative film before. I only have experience with slide films, like Fuji Velvia, so I was curious about how Ektar handles different types of lighting situations, especially high contrast scenes. Well, it’s obvious that it has a huge dynamic range. It’s incredible, that I was able to shoot into the sun and still have a blue sky. It has colors nearly as strong as slide film and it really works for all situations. I simply fell in love with this film.

This image below was taken while hiking the Horseshoe Lake Loop Trail.
